In 1845, they had a brass and leather scabbard, and in 1855, they got a steel scabbard. Now, let's move on to the French sword. It has a very nice blade, as I'm sure you can see, with a brass hilt. Similarly, the British sword, the 1845 Hatton infantry officer's sword, has a brass hilt and a different style of blade. Before I go into comparing and contrasting these two swords, let me briefly show you what came before in both cases. In France, the 1822 pattern looked like this, with a slightly more minimalist guard and a blade that is more similar to the light cavalry 1822 pattern, meaning it has a full curve and a point located to the rear of the blade, like a cavalry saber. This continued to be in use in France. On the other hand, in Britain, we had a pipe-backed blade from 1820 until 1845.
